Izhak Frenkel-Frenel (1899-1983)
Born in Odessa, Frenkel got his first art training there, then came to Israel in 1919.In 1920 he went to Paris for further study returning in 1925. A year later he opened a private art school for adults in Tel-Aviv and enrolled such students as Holzman, Kossonogi, Levanon, Hendler. One of the first painters to appreciate the Safed and Galilee landscape. Frenkel nevertheless spent most of his time in Paris and is regarded as belonging to the Ecole de Paris and one of the heirs of East European Jewish expressionism. He has had many one-man shows in Paris, other European and American cities, as well as in galleries in Israel and his own studio in Safed. He was awarded the Dizengoff Prize five times and represented Israel in 1950 at the Venice Biennale.
